  3. This is the README.TXT file distributed with Almanac for
  4. Windows 3.0.

  7. REGISTRATION
  8. ------------
  9. Almanac is not free software.  It is released as
  10. shareware, which provides the opportunity for the
  11. program to be evaluated before it is purchased.
  12.  
  13. We hope that after you try Almanac you will like
  14. it so much that you will want to register.  By
  15. doing so you are voting with your pocketbook for
  16. us to continue developing high-quality, Windows
  17. shareware.

  20. is included in the REGISTER.TXT file.

  23. LEGAL MATTERS
  24. -------------
  25. We are not responsible for anything at all.  Nothing.
  26. Even if we are held responsible, the limit of our
  27. liability is the licensing fees you paid.  The full text
  28. of our license agreement is found near the bottom of
  29. this file.

  32. UPDATING A PREVIOUS ALMANAC INSTALLATION
  33. ----------------------------------------
  34. If you are updating a 3.0 Almanac installation, you may
  35. want to de-select one or more of the installation
  36. options.  The following table explains what files will
  37. be copied to your hard disk for each option:
  38.  
  39.     Program Files:  Copies the executable program file
  40.                     and supporting modules.
  41.  
  42.  Default Calendar:  Copies the DEFAULT.ALC calendar file
  43.                     used by Almanac on start-up.  Also
  44.                     copies the ALMLOCN.DAT file that
  45.                     contains location and time zone
  46.                     information for various cities.
  47.  
  48.   Sample Overlays:  Copies the sample overlays files
  49.                     included with the Almanac release.
  50.  
  51. Online Help Files:  Copies help files that can be
  52.                     accessed from Almanac's Help menu.
  53.  
  54.  
  55. COMPATIBILITY
  56. -------------
  57. If you are running a version of Almanac earlier than
  58. 3.0, please be advised that the format of the desktop
  59. data files has been changed.  Notes and appointments
  60. entered in Almanac 1.0 through 1.04 (*.ALD files)
  61. will require translation to the new data base format.
  62. Refer to the XLATEALD.TXT file for instructions on
  63. how to convert these data files using XLATEALD.EXE.
  64.  
  65. Overlays created with earlier versions of Almanac
  66. (*.ALO files) are 100% compatible with Almanac 3.0.
  67. The wedding anniversary gifts are now optional.
  68. You may edit any wedding anniversary definitions
  69. created with pre-3.0 versions and and check the
  70. Wedding check box to display this information.

  74. INSTALLING ALMANAC 3.0
  75. ----------------------
  76. The Almanac package includes a graphical Windows
  77. installation program using the standard name of SETUP.EXE.
  78. You should place all of the files included in the release
  79. package on a floppy disk or in a temporary directory of
  80. your hard drive.
  81.  
  82. SETUP requires about 600K bytes to complete the
  83. installation of Almanac.  Once installed, the Almanac
  84. files will occupy approximately 400K.
  85.  
  86. Run SETUP by selecting the 'Run...' command from the
  87. File menu of Program Manager or File Manager. Enter
  88. "d:\SETUP" as the Command Line, where "d" is the
  89. drive/directory that you are installing Almanac FROM
  90. (i.e. A:\SETUP).
  91.  
  92. The first action performed by SETUP is to display the
  93. date your computer is set to.  Almanac's calendar
  94. cannot be installed for proper evaluation if your
  95. computer is not set to the correct date.
  96.  
  97. SETUP will prompt for the target directory you would like
  98. to install Almanac to on your hard disk.  Accept the
  99. default or enter a directory of your choice.
  100.  
  101. SETUP will then display a dialog of the components that
  102. can be installed.  You should leave all of the boxes
  103. checked if this is a first time installation.
  104.  
  105. If you are using Program Manager as your Windows shell,
  106. SETUP will allow a Program Manager group to be selected
  107. to receive the startup icon for Almanac.
  108.  
  109. SETUP will inform you when installation is complete, and
  110. direct you to the WHATSNEW.TXT and REGISTER.TXT files.

  113. IF SETUP REPORTS PROBLEMS UPDATING COMMDLG:
  114.  
  115.   1) Exit Windows and restart Windows to insure a clean
  116.      system.
  117.  
  118.   2) Hold down the SHIFT key while Windows is initial-
  119.      izing.  This will prevent Windows from launching
  120.      any other applications after Program Manager.
  121.  
  122.   3) Do NOT use the Browse function to start SETUP.
  123.      Doing so will invoke the COMMDLG module and
  124.      prevent SETUP from completing the installation.

  135.  SOFTWARE LICENSE
  136.  
  137.  Non-licensed users are granted a limited license to use Almanac
  138.  on a 30-day trial basis for the purpose of determining 
  139.  whether Almanac is suitable for their needs.  The use 
  140.  of Almanac, except for the initial 30-day trial, 
  141.  requires registration.  The use of unlicensed copies of Almanac,
  142.  outside of the initial 30-day trial, by any person, 
  143.  business, corporation, government agency or any other entity is 
  144.  strictly prohibited. 
  145.  
  146.  A single user license permits a user to use Almanac
  147.  only on a single computer.  Licensed users may use the
  148.  program on different computers, but may not use the program
  149.  on more than one computer at the same time.
  150.  
  151.  No one may modify or patch the Almanac executable files 
  152.  in any way, including but not limited to decompiling, 
  153.  disassembling, or otherwise reverse engineering the program. 
  154.  
  155.  A limited license is granted to copy and distribute Almanac 
  156.  only for the trial use of others, subject to the above 
  157.  limitations, and also the following: 
  158.  
  159.   1)    Almanac and all of its release files must be copied
  160.         in unmodified form, complete with the file containing
  161.         this license information.
  162.  
  163.   2)    Almanac may not be distributed in conjunction with
  164.         any other product without a specific license to do so
  165.         from Impact Software.
  166.  
  167.   3)    No fee, charge, or other compensation may be requested or
  168.         accepted, except as authorized below:
  169.  
  170.         A) Operators of electronic bulletin board systems (sysops)
  171.            may make Almanac available for downloading only as
  172.            long as the above conditions are met.  An overall or
  173.            time-dependent charge for the use of the bulletin board
  174.            system is permitted as long as there is not a specific
  175.            charge for the download of Almanac.
  176.  
  177.         B) Vendors of user-supported or shareware software approved by
  178.            the ASP may distribute Almanac, subject to the
  179.            above conditions, without specific permission.  Non-
  180.            approved vendors may distribute Almanac only after
  181.            obtaining written permission from Impact Software.
  182.            Such permission is usually granted.  Please write for
  183.            details (enclose your catalog).

  185.         C) Non-profit user groups may distribute copies of the 
  186.            Almanac diskette to their members, subject to 
  187.            the above conditions, without specific permission.  
  188.            Non-profit groups may collect a disk duplication fee 
  189.            not to exceed five dollars. 
  190.  
  191.   LIMITED WARRANTY
  192.  
  193.   Impact Software warrants that all disks provided are
  194.   free from defects in material and workmanship, assuming
  195.   normal use, for a period of 90 days from the date of
  196.   purchase.
  197.  
  198.   Impact Software warrants that the program will perform
  199.   in substantial compliance with the documentation supplied
  200.   with the software product.  If a significant defect in
  201.   the product is found, the Purchaser may return the
  202.   product for a refund.  In no event will such a refund
  203.   exceed the purchase price of the product.
  204.  
  205.   EXCEPT AS PROVIDED ABOVE, IMPACT SOFTWARE DISCLAIMS ALL
  206.   WARRANTIES, EITHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, BUT NOT
  207.   LIMITED TO IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND
  208.   FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, WITH RESPECT TO THE
  209.   PRODUCT.  SHOULD THE PROGRAM PROVE DEFECTIVE, THE
  210.   PURCHASER ASSUMES THE RISK OF PAYING THE ENTIRE COST OF
  211.   ALL NECESSARY SERVICING, REPAIR, OR CORRECTION AND ANY
  212.   INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES.  IN NO EVENT WILL
  213.   IMPACT SOFTWARE BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES WHATSOEVER
  214.   (INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF
  215.   BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS
  216.   INFORMATION AND THE LIKE) ARISING OUT OF THE USE OR THE
  217.   INABILITY TO USE THIS PRODUCT EVEN IF IMPACT SOFTWARE
  218.   HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

  220.   Use of this product for any period of time constitutes
  221.   your acceptance of this agreement and subjects you to its
  222.   contents.

  224.   U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS
  225.  
  226.   Use, duplication, or disclosure by the Government is subject
  227.   to restrictions as set forth in subdivision (b)(3)(ii) of
  228.   the Rights in Technical Data and Computer Software clause at
